We live in a culture that loves scandals. The news media exploits them. People gossip about them. There’s nothing like a good scandal to get the world talking. Over 2,000 years ago, the seemingly insignificant and out of the way town of Bethlehem became the center of a scandal that rocked the world. A family with skeletons in the closet. A relationship that broke all of the cultural norms. An unorthodox leader with no political experience who became a threat to those in power. A King who abandoned the prerogatives of the throne. It was a scandal that got the whole world talking. But we have tamed Christmas. We’ve commercialized it, normalized it and made it feel safe. This Christmas season we’ll unpack the scandal of Bethlehem and explore what it means to live a “scandalous” life.
