A lot of times we put a negative connotation on the idea of “ritual.” But as we approach Christmas, we surround ourselves with those things that we’ve done year after year. The holiday movie. The Christmas Eve candlelight service. The Christmas morning meal. The smell of gingerbread wafting through the house. The way granddad always falls asleep on the couch. We all have rituals when it comes to Christmas. And they are the things that come to mind first when we think of the holidays. This year, as we approach the celebration of Christ’s birth, we’re going to look at rituals we find comfort in as a community of Christ followers.

This series looks great. Any way to get outlines for it?

I looked through our archives and we do not have any outlines for these messages, just the sermon audio that we’ve already posted. I did find a paragraph describing the purpose/genesis of the series, which I’ve included below.

Explain the power of ritual. The higher the level of ritual, the stronger the group, the greater the group solidarity, the greater the emotional strength, the more the group values are shared. Biblical example: The kosher laws of the Old Testament. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that the purpose of the kosher meal was nutritional or biological. The primary purpose was relational and spiritual. The kosher meal was a ritual that set Israel apart. It was a daily and holy reminder of who they were, who they followed, and what they valued. Rituals in the church community and in the family accomplish the same thing.
