Proverbs speaks wisdom on the parent-child relationship and on the child-parent relationship. A parent’s job is to help their children become wise. Teach them good from bad, right from wrong, and wise from unwise. A child’s goal is to honor his or her parents. Honor is different than trust, obedience, or admiration. Ways to honor parents are as follows: observe culturally appropriate symbols of respect, address a parent’s need to see themselves reproduced in his or her child, accept parents as they are today, forgive them, and let go of your need for their approval.
