In Nehemiah 8, the Israelites had rebuilt the wall around Jerusalem in just 52 days. However, although the broken wall had been restored, the broken people were not. The Israelites were living at the intersection of pain and hope, a place we also live in a lot. After a long reading of God’s word, something most of the Israelites had never heard before, they began to weep because they never realized God had a different, better story for them. This is what we have in Jesus; we can find joy and strength in the pain of this broken, sinful world because of the hope He offers for our stories.
